Thai's Story
“You can’t find another employer like this; they understand that our families are important.”
"If you are feeling stuck, bored or feel you need a change, this is a great place to be!"
"You can move up, you can move down, you can leave and come back! The door is always open with new opportunities!” Thai started at Homes for Independent Living (HIL), a MyPath Company, as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) in 2006. Three programs and 17 years later, Thai continues to share her passion for supporting people with developmental disabilities with her co-workers and the families of the people who call HIL home. Thai has grown a lot over her years at Homes for Independent Living! She has worked with many different clients and each one has taught her something that she continues to carry with her.
Thai knew she had found the right company to work for when she had to take a leave of absence due to a family crisis. Her HIL family supported her during her time away and didn’t make her feel like she needed to rush back to work. When she was ready to come back to work, she was welcomed with open arms. “You can’t find another employer like this; they understand that our families are important.”
Every day Thai works to make a difference in the lives of the people she supports. Thai says she enjoys helping the clients “live their best life!” It is a treasure to see them smile when you walk in the door. One of her fondest memories is taking care of a client who was on Hospice. She feels grateful that she was able to provide support to someone she deeply cared for during the end stages of life and to be a support to the family. Thai also remembers the fun times she has had over the years, such as taking clients to a food fair in Milwaukee and enjoying everything the fair had to offer.
Thai explains that every day is different at HIL, but a lot of clients thrive on routine! Thai helps establish those routines with consistency in her approach. Knowing the difference between a cry and a laugh for someone who is unable to speak for him or herself and being able to read and understand non-verbal cues helps Thai succeed in her role. Thai has a passion to help others and enjoys helping the clients she supports accomplish their goals.
Thai’s positive attitude and genuine care for the people she works with and those she supports is evident in every interaction she has. She is an exemplary employee-owner who lives our beliefs and behaviors naturally…they are part of who she inherently is.
When asked, what does being an employee-owner mean to you? Thai remarked, “It means that you get to see the growth of the company and see your hard work pay off. Seeing the new things that come makes you feel a part of it because you are an employee-owner.” Employee-owners can succeed at MyPath with a good work ethic, teamwork, respect for your peers and a positive attitude!
Sara Allen, HIL Regional Director, notes that "Thai’s positive attitude and genuine care for the people she works with and those she supports is evident in every interaction she has. She is an exemplary employee-owner who lives our beliefs and behaviors naturally…they are part of who she inherently is. When Thai is at work, her presence makes people feel like they are wrapped in a warm blanket. We are so very grateful to have you on our team, Thai!"
